Nicholas was born and raised in Greenwood, SC and worked as a carpenter. He loved fishing and skiing and he also has a passion for history and science research. He attended Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, SC.

Surviving are his mother, Carol Blad of Fort Pierce, FL; father and step-mother, Marvin and Martha Tanner of Greenwood; step-father, Ralph Eric Blad, Jr. of Merritt Island, FL; brother, Justin Travis Blad of Fort Pierce, FL and numerous aunt and uncles.
