Born in Naka, Okinawa, she was a daughter of the late Heikichi and Kame Hirata. She was a member of Honea Path First Baptist Church and was retired from Chiquola Mills. She formerly worked at Oxford Shirt Plant and The Maples.
Surviving are: two sons, Joel Penland Jr. and Rick (Lisa) Penland, both of Honea Path; three sisters, Takeko and Masako of Japan, and Suziko Hickey of Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Linda Crawford of Gray Court and Faye Roberts of Due West; three grandchildren, Akira, Kassi (Austin) Kyle, and Kristan (Daniel) Keown; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Wrigley; close relative Pat Ball of Aiken; and niece Keiko Nakada.
Mrs. Penland was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Tsutomu Hirata; two brothers, Kanei and Heisyo; and four sisters, Chiru, Hatsu, Chiyoko, and Michiko.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Garden of Memories with Rev. Mike Moody officiating.
The family is at the home of her son, Rick, 1420 Austin Rd, Honea Path, and will receive friends after the service at the graveside.
