Born in Donalds, he was a son of the late S. A. and Ava Latham Fleming. He served his country as a medic in the U. S. Army, and in the S.C. Army National Guard. He was a retired textile mechanic, an avid gardener, cook, and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was also a member of Independent Lodge #23 A. F. M., and was a devoted loving member of Station 5, “Keowee Fire Department” for over 50 years, where he served as an active fireman and the treasurer.
Though small in stature and weighing only 2 lbs at birth, he could outwork any young strapping lad around. He was known as “Pee Wee” to many, but had the strength and determination of Samson. He loved our Lord and Savior and could pray the sweetest prayer your ears have ever heard. Though lengthy at times it was all from the heart, and worth the time to absorb every word. He was a great cook, made the BEST cornbread you have ever tasted. Vegetables (home grown) always seasoned with fatback, blessed as God would have it.
Longing to be a fireman since the age of 7, he fulfilled that dream. He was able to respond to innumerable fire calls, being the first on the scene. He trained many younger men and was highly respected by his fellow responders. Even in his final months and instructed not to go on further calls, he could not refrain from his duties. Surprisingly, he would still drive the truck in weakness, but determination that surprised everyone.
Larry is survived by his son Johnny Fleming, his daughters Kathy Ready and Brenda “Mook” Picklesimer, his stepson Louie Branyon, his brothers: Sam Fleming and Jerry Fleming; his sisters: Susie Smith and Martha Hyder; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and many others who considered him “Papa Larry”.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sons: Donnie “Duck” Branyon and Jack Branyon; his daughter Kristie F. Keaton and son-in-law Marshall Brian Keaton; his brother Harry “Hot Dog” Fleming; and his sisters: Rachel Collins and Sally Ruth Strawhorn.
Larry’s family would like to extend their special appreciation to Rick Branyon for his devotion and companionship.
