Born in Smithfield, NC, she was a daughter of the late J.C. and Marie Frye Stroud. She was a longtime member of Mt Gallagher Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School class of 1959. Mrs. Hughes leaves behind a legacy of love for her family, friends, church and family pets.

In addition to her husband of the home, Mrs. Hughes is survived by one daughter, Rhetta Hughes Slack (Derrick) of Ninety Six, a daughter-in-law, Tracy Hughes of Winston Salem, NC, two grandchildren, Alicia Callaham (Shane) and James A. Hughes III and two great-grandchildren, Dakota Richey and Charlotte Richey. She also loved her many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, James Ambler Hughes Jr., four brothers, Connie Stroud, Keith Stroud, John Stroud, Archie Stroud, and three sisters, Tommie Lander, Jan Peeler and Mary Ella Brown.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hughes will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Mt Gallagher Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Marcus Bishop and Rev. Nate Wiles officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 12 to 1 prior to the service at the church. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to The Mt Gallagher Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund at 11570 Indian Mound Rd, Ware Shoals, SC 29692.
