She graduated from Lander College with a Bachelor’s degree in education.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Walter Michael Hughes, Sr., sisters Joan and Susan, and brothers “Little Charlie” and “Bill.” She is now joyfully reunited with these and other family members.
She is survived by her sons, Mike, Jr. (Van Haygood) and Ben (Beth), grandchildren Katie (Brandon Hawkins) and “Bo.” She is also survived by her sisters-in-love Betty Hughes Mitchell and Claudette Ramey Hughes, and her brother-in-love Alan Fant.
Barbara was a retired school teacher, Sunday school teacher, member of the Honea Path First Baptist Church and choir, member of the WMU, the Garden Club, served on the Eastview Cemetery committee and as a Board member for the Jennie Erwin Library. An avid reader, Barbara was proud of the fact that Honea Path is the smallest town in the U.S. to receive money from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the town’s library.
