Howard Scott

Honea Path - James Howard Scott, 88, husband of Gloria Robinson Edwards Scott, of The Maples, died on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson after a 5 year battle with cancer.



He was born on December 21st, 1927, in Honea Path, a son of the late James Adger Scott and Mae Elizabeth Lollis Scott. He was a member of the Honea Path First Baptist Church and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. He was twice married, first to the late Elise Hudson Scott.

Howard and Gloria shared a special second chance at love and they married Nov. 16, 2002 and lived in Honea Path. Howard, as he preferred to be called, grew up in the Friendship Community of Honea Path; attended Friendship School and graduated from Honea Path High School. He joined the Navy before the end of WWII and served stateside at Norfolk, Va. and he served in Annapolis as well. He spoke fondly of days sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and fishing with his best friend Jim Aiken. Howard received an honorable discharge and attended Clemson University graduating in 1952, Textile Engineering, and Entered as 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve servicing jet aircraft. He served the Air Force Reserve as a First Lieutenant for 8 years before receiving an honorable discharge. Upon graduating from Clemson, he went to Ware Shoals, SC and worked as a trainer for the textile mill in production control. Mr. Scott worked in textile production and retired from Clinton Mills, Clinton, SC.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Scott is survived by his children; daughter, Anne Lane (Riley) of Mountville, two sons, James David Scott (Julie) of Chapin, and John Mark Scott (Robin) of Chapin, two step-daughters, Patricia Neely (John) of Honea Path and Amy Gifford (Nelo) of Estill, a sister, Vonnie S. Ellison of Belton, four grandchildren, Jan (Jes) Elise Scott, Jonathan Neely, Lindsay Gilford, and Branham Gilford, two nephews, Joe Wayne Ellison (Debbie) and Earle Ellison (Diane), and a niece, Linda E. Webb (David), and adopted nieces and nephews from the family of Jim Aiken.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, educator, Elise Hudson-Scott where they shared family and home in Fountain Inn, Union, and then Clinton, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Honea Path First Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Moody and Rev. Dr. Alexander S. Campbell, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at 4 P.M. in Pinelawn Memory Gardens, Clinton, SC.

The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM Sunday at Honea Path First Baptist Church prior to the service.
