Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Hoyt Byars and Nell Wilson Shirley. He was a member of Honea Path First Baptist Church. He was a retired dairy farmer, and co-owner of Shirley’s Dairy. Mr. Shirley served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II.
Surviving are his wife of the home, a son, Max Hoyt Shirley (Susan) of Belton, three daughters, Gloria Pruitt (Chris) of Cross Hill, Bonnie Kinght (Marty) of Belton, and Janice Hunter (Robbie) of Lexington, a brother, James Shirley of Honea Path, a sister, Fay Vaughan of Augusta, Ga., ten grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son Bud Arnold Shirley, a brother, Nathan Shirley, and two sisters, Martha Knight, and Vivian Beech.
Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Sunday at Belton Presbyterian Church, 405 Jim Russell Way, Belton, SC, with Rev. Mike Moody officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories.
The family is at the home and will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday at Belton Presbyterian Church prior to the service.
