Honea Path – Joel Maynor Penland, Sr., 76, husband of Yoshiko Hirata Penland, of 123 Franklin St., died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Wade Dewey and Vivian Sue Maynor Penland. Mr. Penland was a member of Honea Path High School Class of 1957 and played for the Honea Path Stingers. He was a member of Honea Path First Baptist Church and the Dwight McNinch Sunday School class. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran after 20 years of service with the rank of E-8 Aviation Supply Senior Chief, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He also served as a Honea Path City Councilman and retired from Parke-Davis.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 46 years of the home are: two sons, Richard (Lisa) Penland and Joel Penland, Jr., both of Honea Path, a step-son, Tsumo Hirata, a sister, Linda Crawford of Gray Court, two grandchildren, Kassi and Kristan Penland both of Honea Path, and a special cousin, Patricia Ball of Aiken. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Penland.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Honea Path First Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Dickerson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Garden of Memories.
