Jimmie Powell

Ware Shoals – James Byrnes “Jimmie” Powell, 82, passed away at his home November 1, 2013. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 54 years, Margie Mae Burton Powell.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Edgar and Ruth Thackston Powell. He was a member of the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church and was retired Owner and President of “The Powell Company”. He was very instrumental in the development and incorporation of the Town of Ware Shoals. As a broker, he started the Multiple Listing Service in Greenwood.  He retired as Major from the South Carolina Army National Guard, Past President of the Ware Shoals Lions Club and Jaycees and was a member of the Ware Shoals Lodge #306 A.F.M.

Surviving are three sons Ray Powell and wife Sherry, Larry Powell and wife Jean, and Glenn Powell and wife Candace, all of Ware Shoals, and two daughters, Robin Powell, Larry Hess of  Greenville and Janet P. Merritt and husband Dennis of Cary, N.C., three sisters, Lucille Shaver of Greenwood, Martha Lee West of Florida, and Lillie Rogers of Royston, Ga., ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a special friend Miriam Babb of Simpsonville. He was predeceased by a daughter, Virginia Ruth Powell, a brother, Mack Powell, and two sisters, Faye Davis and Hattie Hallbrook.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M  on Monday at the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 on Monday at the church prior to the service. A special thanks to Dr. Darby Pendergrass who was a long time friend.  In leui of flowers memorials should be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 449, Ware Shoals, SC 29692.
