Formerly of Ware Shoals and Due West, SC, Mrs. Hill was born on January 20, 1914, in Due West, SC, the daughter of Thomas Newton and Lula Blackwell Latimer. She was educated at Due West High School and Erskine College, and led a full and colorful life – teaching school in the mountains at Penland, NC, in a one-room schoolhouse at Mt. Gallagher in Laurens County, and at Camak Elementary and Ware Shoals Primary Schools in Ware Shoals District 51; building combat aircraft in California during WWII; and enjoying the “going and doing” anytime anybody was going and doing – and usually being the life of the party in doing so. Generations of her family and friends will remember her recitations of “Little Orphant Annie” and other classic poems that she continued even into her late nineties. She was loved wherever she went.
Mrs. Hill was predeceased by her parents, and by a brother, T.S. Latimer and his wife, Genie: and two sisters, Celia Latimer Gasque and her husband, J. Roy; and Elizabeth Latimer Martin and her husband J. Harold, and by two nephews, Dick Gasque and Jim Gasque and wife, Jane Anne.
She is survived by the remainder of her “children,” her nieces and nephews and their families: Jim (Ann) Cranford and John (Peggy) Cranford of Winston-Salem, NC; Celia Gasque and nephew Dick Gasque’s wife, Delle, of Greenville, SC; Kay (Fred) Payne of Simpsonville, SC; Jerry Martin of Charlotte, N.C.; and Tom (Terry) Martin of Anderson, SC. She also considered the generations of children whom she taught as her “children.”
