Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Kenneth Lury Coleman, Sr. and Rose Ashley Coleman Fields. He attended Chiquola Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Iva is: a brother, Kenny Coleman and wife Linda of Piedmont.
