Mallie Fleming “Granny” Brock

Due West – Mallie Fleming Brock, 90, a resident of The Maples in Honea Path, formerly of Due West, died on Sunday September 30, 2012 at the Rainey Upstate Hospice. She was the widow of Carlton Brock.

Born November 5, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Iva Fleming. She was a long time member of Due West Baptist Church. She taught the children’s Sunday School class for many years.

 Mallie will be remembered for raising 3 small children after a house fire on October 2, 1946. Her husband, Carlton Brock, lost his life as a result of this fire. Mallie devoted her life to teaching and caring for her three children whose ages at the time were 7, 5, and 3. Mallie became a widow at age 25. Her children are so thankful for her devotion and care for them.

 Mallie is the last surviving member of her immediate family and her late husband’s family. Deceased are her brothers, Van Fleming (died in infancy), Roy Fleming, Bert Fleming, and Broadus Fleming, sisters, Allie Haynes (twin sister) and Frances Ashley.

She is survived by three children, Lena Gambrell (Grady Truman), Bobby Brock (Pat), and Randall Brock (Nancy), nine grandchildren, Grady Gambrell (Marlette), Audrey Martin (Billy), Brian Gambrell (Denise), Kelly Simpson (Tommy), Tara Madden, Allison Dry (Roland), Kristy Hill (James), Randy Brock (Edie), and Shirley Peubler (Tommy), thirteen great-grandchildren, Sara Kotula (Ryan), Brock Gambrell, Ellis Martin, Nathaniel Gambrell, Elizabeth Gambrell, Gabby Simpson, Chandler Madden, Mallisyn Madden, Joshua Dry, Lauren Dry, Emilly Hill, Gibson Hill, and Indy Shaleuy (Jamie),

Four great-great grandchildren, Bryson Shaleuy, Savannah Shaleuy, Abby Kotula, and Michael Kotula, and also many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by Henrietta Timms of Abbeville and Muriel McCoy of Honea Path, who were like her daughters, and also Marilyn Johnson of Anderson who helped with Mallie’s health care and also became like a daughter to her.

Mallie loved life so much and was always happy when her family was with her. Mallie spent her last five years (2007) as a resident of The Maples in Honea Path. When she was asked how she liked The Maples, her reply was, “I had a good home in Due West, but when you cannot take care of yourself, this is the best place in the world.” She truly loved everyone at The Maples. She was also an avid Gamecock!

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mallie will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday October 3, 2012 at Due West Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Roland Dry and Rev. Thelton Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Due West ARP Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Terry Fleming, Ricky Ashley, Danny Ashley, Scott Ashley, Dwayne Fleming, Daniel Sloan, Louie Fleming, and Tim Ashley.

The family will receive friends from 5 -7 P.M. Tuesday at Pruitt Funeral Home. The families are at their respective homes. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to The Maples Recreation Fund, 224 Wildwood Drive, Honea Path, SC 29654.
