Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late John Wesley Sr. and Frances Levon Brooks Gambrell. He was of the Baptist faith, and worked as a painter.
John is survived by his daughter Amy (Matthew) Woodson of Anderson, three sisters: Cheryl (Charles) Dooley of Honea Path, Karen Ashley of Honea Path and Denise (Daniel) Leigaber of Anderson; three grandchildren: Madison Woodson, Chase Woodson and Brianna Woodson.
