Born in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late John Phillips and Doris Abercrombie Rice. He was a member of Reedy Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church and a veteran of the US Army. He was retired from The Monsanto Co. Jerry enjoyed the outdoors, farming, and fishing.

Surviving are a son, Billy Phillips of Waterloo, a daughter, Julie P Burgess of NC, a brother, David Rice of Ware Shoals, four sisters, Jackie Howard of Greenville, Linda Bennett of Hickory Tavern, Kitty Ball of Liberty and Sherry Cash both of Liberty, four grandchildren, Scott Smothers, Justin Phillips, Michael Phillips, and Brandon Fowler, and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son, Johnny Phillips, three brothers, Fred Phillips, Butch Rice, and Terry Wayne Phillips,

Memorial services will be held 11 AM Monday, April 7, 2025 at Reedy Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church with  Rev. Grady Lothridge officiating.
