Born in Anderson, he was a son of the late Floyd Clayton VanHouter and the late Carolyn Inez Crawford. He was of the Baptist Faith and had formerly been employed by the Town Café of Honea Path.

Surviving are a daughter, Angel Louise VanHouter of Honea Path, a brother Jonathan Wyatt Crawford (Jackie) of Anderson, a sister, Jamie Nichole Crawford (James) of Honea Path, and seven nieces and nephews, Haley, Noah, Logan, Bailey, Zoey, Anna, and Madalynn.
