Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late William Lester and Pearlie Mae Kennington Cole. He was formerly a member of Keowee Baptist Church in Honea Path and a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. John was formerly employed as a Supervisor for Security Forces, Inc. He was twice married first to the late Johnnie Mae Porter Cole.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: his son, William Timothy (Ruth) Cole of Rock Hill, two brothers, Donald Wayne Cole of Myrtle Beach and Dwight Cole of Lancaster, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Wanda Grace Morrow.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date in Rock Hill, SC.
