Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late Johnny Mason and Lois Inez Bock Smith. He was of the Baptist faith and a US Marine Corp Veteran.

Mr. Smith is survived by one brother: Herbert Haynie Smith and wife Loretta of Honea Path; one sister: Peggy Jane Alewine of Iva; two step-daughters: Laura Skelton and husband Richard of Greenwood and Debra Dorsey of Walnut Creek, CA, a step-son, Curt Keller and wife Holly of Greenwood, and six step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Ray Smith.
