Col. Proctor Hawkins

Lexington - Proctor Bonham Hawkins Jr., husband of Nancy Leonard Hawkins, originally of Honea Path, South Carolina, passed from this life on Sunday, February 7, 2016.

Born January 16, 1937, he was a son of the late Proctor Bonham Hawkins, Sr. and Cornelia Brooks Hawkins. Proctor grew up in Honea Path and was a graduate of Honea Path High School and Furman University who dedicated his life to education. A Music Major at Furman, he began his career as a band instructor but his organization and leadership skills led him into administration. He served as a vice-principal and principal at various High Schools in Greenville, South Carolina before taking a position at the State Department of Education in Columbia in 1977. Proctor lived in Lexington, South Carolina until 1986, when he returned to the upstate as the Assistant Superintendent of Education for Anderson School District 5, a position from which he retired in 2003.

Proctor also gave many years of dedicated service to the Army and Army Reserves. He entered the Army at age 22 and served stateside during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Army as a full Colonel in 1992.

Above all, Proctor was a dedicated family man who took great care of his wife, son, and later his grandchildren. While he will be greatly missed, his kindness and generosity will be cherished and emulated by his family for years to come. In addition to his wife Nancy, Proctor is survived by his son Michael Hawkins, daughter-in law Jamey Hawkins, grandchildren, Ryan, Emma, Avery, Eden, and Delaney Kate of Lexington, and his brother, James Hawkins, and sister-in-law, Susan of Atlanta, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 12, 2016 at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Moody officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories.

The family is at their respective homes, and will receive friends Friday, 2-3 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home. Proctor passed from this life after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
