Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late Barney L and Katie Mae Bates Ferguson. He was a member of the Honea Path Church of God. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and had also served in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Richey of Honea Path, and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Alvin James and Bill Ferguson and two sisters, Marion Burriss and Hazel Griffin.
